Regular checks can find complications before you feel unwell.

Text version
Low blood counts
Kidney disease can contribute to anemia, which may cause tiredness or breathlessness. Your team checks blood counts, iron, and other causes before choosing treatment.
Bones and minerals
Kidneys help balance calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D. Changes can affect bone health. Treatment follows your blood-test trends and stage of kidney disease.
Potassium balance
Too much or too little potassium can affect the heart. Symptoms may be absent, so laboratory checks matter. Do not change supplements or medicines on your own.
Fluid and pressure
Extra salt and water may cause swelling or high blood pressure. Food choices, medicines, and sometimes dialysis help manage fluid; the plan is different for each person.
Acid and nutrition
Advanced kidney disease can cause acid buildup or appetite changes. Tell your team about nausea, weight loss, or declining strength so the cause can be assessed.
Keep a shared plan
Bring your medication list and ask which tests are due. Severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or a new abnormal heartbeat needs urgent attention.
