Why a biopsy helps

A biopsy removes a tiny sample for examination under a microscope. It can identify the cause of kidney disease and help your team choose or avoid specific treatments.

Get the hold-and-restart list

Show every prescription, OTC medicine, and supplement to the biopsy team. Ask for written last-dose and restart dates for blood thinners or other medicines. Do not stop them just because a general handout says they can cause bleeding.

Confirm four things beforehand

Confirm required labs/BP check, fasting instructions, transport home, and the after-hours phone number. Tell the team about allergies or pregnancy. If an instruction is unclear, call before the procedure rather than guessing.

During the procedure

Imaging usually guides the needle. Local anesthetic numbs the area, and staff explain how to position yourself or briefly hold your breath. The exact approach varies.

Before leaving, check the plan

Know your activity/lifting limits, medicine restart dates, dressing instructions, and result-review appointment. Recovery restrictions depend on the procedure and your condition. Arrange help at home if needed and follow the center’s written instructions.

Bleeding signs need prompt help

Seek prompt assessment for worsening flank/back pain, heavy/persistent blood or clots in urine, fever, or trouble urinating. Fainting, severe weakness, or severe breathing difficulty warrants emergency help. Do not wait for the pathology result.
